Just leave them alone! The deep planting recommended on these pages should enable the clumps to be left in place indefinitely.
If there is any drop-off in bloom, fertilize while in growth once or twice during the growing
season with whatever you use on your other flowers. The effect will be seen in the following year.
Sprinkling fireplace ashes every now and then is always worth doing.
At least a minimal amount of weed control while bulbs are in growth is desirable --
occasional renewal of mulches is helpful for this. Roundup herbicide is safe around people and pets and can be used around bulbs
any time the green leaves are not showing. The bulbs' summer dormant period is a good time to spray out aggressive summer weeds in bulb beds such as kikuyu or Bermuda grasses,
red sorrel, or oxalis. Landscapers beware, however, of preemergent chemicals such as Ronstar or Goal,
as these can severely burn narcissus leaves as they pass through the treated soil surface. Ask me for other recommendations. |
